Hot water isn’t a luxury, but a daily necessity when it comes to handwashing, doing the dishes, the laundry, and bathing. We know it’s a big deal when your hot water heater isn’t working or is no longer performing as expected. That’s why we provide fast, emergency service to restore hot water to your property.
If you’re handy, you can do annual tune-ups yourself. Follow these steps, and call us at Best Plumbing, Heating and Cooling if you have any questions.
1. Turn off the circuit breaker if your heater is electric, or the pilot if it is gas. This is important. Then, wait at least an hour for the water to cool.
2. Attach a garden hose to the water heater’s drain valve, with the other end placed where you want the water to drain.
3. Turn off the cold water pipe (at the top of the water heater).
4. Open the drain valve at the bottom to drain the water heater.
5. Once the water stops draining or runs clear, turn on the cold water for several minutes to flush any remaining sediment.
6. Close the drain valve and unhook the hose, making sure nothing is leaking.
7. Let the water heater refill. At the same time, turn on the hot water in the kitchen to get air out of the line.
8. Once the tank has completely filled, turn on the electricity or gas again.
